NHL Rumors: Oilers Shopping Young Forward

In his most recent Trade Deadline Room War piece, Frank Seravalli noted that Tyler Benson is a player from the Edmonton Oilers who could potentially be traded.

The Oilers need a starting goaltender. That has been the team's biggest issue all season and although they are starting to heat up again, it would still be wise to upgrade at the position. However, they may be forced to include Benson as a part of a package to acquire one.

A change of scenery may be something that could benefit Benson. The 23-year-old has had trouble cementing himself a permanent spot in the Oilers' lineup for years and has struggled when called upon. In 21 games this campaign, he has just one assist and a minus-3 rating. Yet, teams could still be interested in him, as he just had 10 goals and 36 points in 36 games with the Bakersfield Condors last season. The potential to be a solid scoring threat is there, but it just hasn't happened at the NHL level yet.

It will be interesting to see if the Oilers decide that Benson is expendable. At this juncture, they need a goaltender very badly. As we inch closer to the deadline, let's see what ends up occurring.
