Red Wings Forward Placed On Waivers

The Detroit Red Wings have placed Gemel Smith on waivers.

The Red Wings just claimed Smith off waivers from the Tampa Bay Lightning a few weeks ago. Due to this, Tampa Bay has first priority to claim him and if they do, they will also have the option to send him to the American Hockey League (AHL) without having to place him back on waivers. Other teams would not have that same luxury, however.

Smith has played in three games with the Red Wings since joining the team. During them, he recorded one assist and also sported a minus-2 rating. He most notably had the opportunity to play with brother, Gemel, but now there's a chance that this will not be happening again - at least with Detroit specifically.

Smith has the tools to be a decent bottom-six forward, so we could see the Lightning or another team decide to claim him. He is known for playing a very physical game, and that certainly is always welcomed to a lineup. In 91 career games between the Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins, Lightning, and Red Wings, he has 12 goals and 13 assists.

Smith has another year on his contract after this one, so that might keep teams away from him. Time will tell what happens on that front.
