Red Wings Sign Veteran Defenseman

Steven Kampfer is heading back to the NHL, as the Detroit Red Wings have signed him to a one-year contract.

Kampfer, a Michigan native, spent the 2020-21 season with Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL. In 46 games with the team, he had a very solid 11 goals and 30 points. His excellent play overseas also allowed him to represent Team USA at the Beijing Winter Olympics. In four games as an alternate captain, he had a goal and four points.

Kampfer has never been known for being an offensive defenseman at the NHL level, so one shouldn't expect those kinds of numbers from him in Detroit. However, he will provide the Red Wings with more depth on the backend and overall experience. In 231 career NHL games between the Wild, Panthers, Rangers, and Bruins, he has 15 goals, 24 assists, and 39 points.
