Dallas Stars & New York Rangers Complete Trade

The Dallas Stars have acquired Nils Lundkvist from the New York Rangers in exchange for a top-10 protected 2023 first-round pick and a conditional 2025 fourth-round pick.

The 2023 first-round pick will change to an unprotected 2024 first-round pick in the event that the Stars end up with a top-10 pick in next year's draft. With that, the 2025 fourth will turn into a third if Lundkvist scores at least 55 points over the next two seasons.

Lundkvist made a trade request during this offseason, as the Rangers did not give him a role that he felt he deserved. Now, the 22-year-old defenseman is heading to Dallas and will be aiming to reach his high potential. With the Stars losing John Klingberg, they are hoping that Lundkvist can develop into a top offensive defenseman just like the former.

Lundkvist has the potential to become a top-four defenseman, but his first year in the NHL was not too strong last year. He played just 25 games with the Blueshirts, where he had one goal and four points. Yet, the Stars are betting on him to reach his potential by giving up a first-round pick and more. Let's see how the change of scenery impacts him from here.
