NHL Rumors: Contract Talks Snagged Between Maple Leafs and RFA Defenseman

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Rasmus Sandin sits without a contract as training camps are set to open. The restricted free-agent blueliner apparently has some concerns and has been hesitant to sign a new deal.

According to Chris Johnston of NorthStarBets.com, Sandin's situation is quite complex as the left side of the Maple Leafs blue line is very crowded with the likes of Morgan Rielly, Jake Muzzin and Mark Giordano. All three veterans are expected to have major roles on the hockey club this season.

The Leafs managed to get restricted free agent Timothy Liljegren signed to a two-year deal worth $1.4 million per season, a contract which could look very similar to Sandin's once it's all said and done.

The former first-round pick appeared in 51 games in 2021-22, recording 16 points. Sandin has the potential to be a solid top-four defenseman who can quarterback a power play. We'll see how things play out in Toronto as training camp looms for the Maple Leafs.
