NHL Rumors: Senators Discussing Defenseman Trade

The Ottawa Senators have made drastic changes this summer and it's apparently not over as the team is in the market for another defenseman.

Senators prospect Jake Sanderson is going to be pressing for a spot in training camp, however according to a source close to the Senators organization, the team has been actively discussing trades involving veteran defensemen. It's likely the team would like to bring Sanderson along slowly and don't want to throw him into a top-4 role just yet.

The Senators currently have Thomas Chabot, Nikita Zaitsev, Travis Hamonic, Artem Zub, Nick Holden and Erik Brannstrom listed on their depth chart. Ideally, they'd like to unload Zaitsev in the process as well as he's underperforming while making $4.5 million against the cap this season and next.

The Sens have been rumored to be involved with the Arizona Coyotes for defenseman Jakob Chychrun, so keep an eye on these two teams as the season approaches. Certainly a chance they strike a deal before training camps begin in a couple of weeks.
