NHL Rumors: Blackhawks' Toews Trade to Come Down to 3 Teams

There's going to come a time this season where the Chicago Blackhawks ask their captain what his intentions are before the trade deadline. From all accounts, Jonathan Toews is expected to waive his no-movement clause for another Stanley Cup Playoff run. Let's examine the three teams believed to be heavy favorites at this point for Toews' services:

Winnipeg Jets

The Jets are Toews' hometown team and they could easily slot him in as the team's third-line center. Even with the Jets having a few million in cap space, the trade won't easily be facilitated as Toews makes $10.5 million against the cap this season. There's certainly a chance the Blackhawks retain 50% and engage a third team to take on some more of his remaining salary. The Jets have the prospect capital to get the deal done and at the end of the day, with a full no-movement clause, Toews is steering the ship, leaving the Blackhawks with little leverage.

Colorado Avalanche

A team with a need down the middle, the defending Stanley Cup champions will be high on Toews' desired locations. This deal makes a ton of sense and should the Avs have interest, expect Toews to be on board with the trade. The Blackhawks captain has 14 points in 25 games and can play in all situations. He'd help fill the void Nazem Kadri left in Colorado come playoff time.

Washington Capitals

Another team with a huge hole to fill down the middle, the Capitals are a team that will be in play here. Especially if Niklas Backstrom doesn't return this season, Washington will have a ton of money to work with and a player with Stanley Cup experience like Toews will be a prime target for the Caps who are looking to get back to the promise land.
