NHL Rumors: Formenton To Be Held Out Of NHL For 2022-23

It is December 1 and the last day for any unsigned players to be signed if they want to play in the NHL this season. The Ottawa Senators have until 5pm ET to make a decision on Alex Formenton. If the Senators don't pull anything off, it will be a waste considering where they are in the standings, the help they need, and the fact that they could have at least used him to get assets back.

Formenton scored 18 goals and 32 points in his first full NHL season and was a very good addition to the Senators' third line. They are surely missing his production this season considering the team is second last in the conference and has some injuries.

This was supposed to be the season the Senators take a step and really fight for a playoff spot. At the very least they could have signed him to a one-year deal to get him NHL action while they try to shop him. It has been said before, Formenton has played his last game in a Senators uniform.

The 23-year-old has the potential to be a consistent 20-goal scorer in the NHL with his speed and finishing ability. It's not out of the realm of possibilities that the Senators can still trade his rights, but the team acquiring him has a few hours to pull off the deal and get him signed or he won't be able to play this season.
