Calgary Flames: 3 Trades to Consider Ahead of 2023 Deadline

The Calgary Flames are expected to find themselves in the mix for a Stanley Cup Playoff spot this season. It's taken awhile for the Flames to find their groove this season, after a rough start with several new players. Speaking of new players, let's dive into three Flames trade scenarios leading up to the March 3 trade deadline:

Flames Trade for Timo Meier

Calgary general manager Brad Treliving has made one thing clear to the rest of the league, he's interested in making bold moves, and he's still on the pursuit of a scoring winger. Meier from the San Jose Sharks would be an ideal fit as he can score with the best of them and plays a hard-nosed style which head coach Darryl Sutter would love. The cost would be significant but totally worth it.

Flames Trade for Vladimir Tarasenko

A player who would cost much less than Meier to acquire is St Louis Blues forward Vladimir Tarasenko. He's on the shelve at the moment but appears to be coming back before the deadline. So far in 2022-23, the Russian sniper has recorded 29 points in 34 games. This deal comes down to desire, as Tarasenko has a full no-trade clause and gets to choose who wins the sweepstakes.

Flames Trade for Andreas Athanasiou

See a trend here? Offensive-minded wingers are top of mind in Calgary, and Chicago Blackhawks winger Andreas Athanasiou fits the bill. He's a pending free agent and has enjoyed some success in his first season in the windy city. The speedster has recorded eight goals in 38 games and would cost the least of these three for Treliving and company to acquire.
