Detroit Red Wings Winger Open to Extension

According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, pending UFA Tyler Bertuzzi is open to signing a new contract with the Detroit Red Wings.

The Red Wings are currently looking like a team who is going to miss the playoffs, so Bertuzzi's name has naturally come up in the rumor mill. This is understandable, as he is a prime rental candidate that several teams will be making a push for if he is made available. Yet, now with this latest report, it is clear that there’s a real chance that Bertuzzi also ends up staying in Detroit rather than being dealt elsewhere.

The Red Wings will likely take the next few weeks to decide whether or not they want to keep Bertuzzi around or trade him. At this juncture of the campaign, he has one goal to go along with four points. Injuries have taken away a significant chunk of his season, so it makes sense that the Red Wings are going to take some time to mull over their next decision with the agitating winger.

It will be interesting to see if the Red Wings do decide to bring Bertuzzi back from here. Yet, if he heats up as the year goes on, Detroit may also be open to the idea of trading him for a decent return at the trade deadline.
