NHL Rumors: Senators & Talbot Working On Extension

The Ottawa Senators have gotten a fairly good return on their goaltender Cam Talbot this season. He has been the better of him and Anton Forsberg and the team is keeping him around past this season. He is going to be a UFA at the end of the season, but talks are currently taking place on a new contract, per Bruce Garrioch.

It was also noted that Talbot may draw some interest at the deadline, but the belief is he wants to stay. The Senators' goaltender has a cap hit of $3.67 million this season, and combined with Forsberg, have less than a $6.5 million cap hit. Forsberg is already signed through 2024-25, so Talbot could get a similar contract length with a bit more money.

Talbot doesn't have the greatest stats this season, but the Senators don't give their goalies a lot of help defensively either. Talbot is 11-12-1 with a 2.91 GAA, .903 SV%, and -1.6 goals saved above average (GSAA) while Forsberg is 8-9-2 with a 3.25 GAA, .902 SV%, and -1.8 GSAA. I can't see Talbot getting more than $4 million AAV on his next deal as his numbers aren't great and he is going to be 36 next season. The Senators have Mads Sogaard who will eventually join the team, but that could be a few years until he is in a full time role. Talbot is a solid option for the time being and would be of more use with the team than a deadline trade.
