San Jose Sharks Rumors: 3 Favorites to Acquire Timo Meier

The San Jose Sharks appear committed to moving forward Timo Meier. He's the top candidate on all of the insiders trade boards and there's no doubt trade discussions are ongoing at the moment. Here's the latest on who is involved in advanced discussions:

Carolina Hurricanes

The Hurricanes were dealt a major blow when Max Pacioretty went down with another injury, however in this case, it could be a bit of a blessing in disguise. The Canes have tons of cap space ahead of the trade deadline and have room to add Meier. They also have the necessary prospect capital and draft picks to make a deal work with Sharks GM Mike Grier. Expect at least one first rounder and prospect Ryan Suzuki to be included and look for Meier to sign a long term deal to stay in Carolina if this deal transpires.

New Jersey Devils

The Devils were the clear favorite before the Hurricanes got involved. Devils captain Nico Hischier and Meier are close friends and there's no doubt GM Tom Fitzgerald would like to pair the two together for the foreseeable future. Meier is the perfect top-line winger the Devils are looking for and he's one of the best power forwards in the game. The prize will be steep however the time is now for New Jersey to start winning meaningful hockey games.

Toronto Maple Leafs

The Maple Leafs would need to get creative as hell to pull this trade off, however they should be considered a top-3 destination at this point. A long term contract wouldn't necessarily be front of mind in this deal and that's something the two sides could explore in the offseason. The Leafs would need to move out at least prospect Fraser Minten and Nick Robertson to get the Sharks attention.
