Philadelphia Flyers' Worst Trade Of The Past Year

For a seller with many assets they could have moved, the Philadelphia Flyers had a very underwhelming trade deadline that inevitably got Chuck Fletcher, the general manager, fired. Their past offseason also didn't go very well as they missed out on big free agent signing Johnny Gaudreau and acquired yet another defenceman, Tony DeAngelo. That's where we are going with this.

The trade that brought in DeAngelo is the worst Flyers' trade of the past year as it was completely unnecessary and puts the team in a bad spot at the moment. They have been trying to stay afloat for too long by continuing to add players instead of diving into a rebuild. The trade to bring in DeAngelo is the most recent evidence of that. He cost the Flyers a 2024 second round pick, 2023 third round pick, and 2022 fourth round pick for the rights to sign him. In doing so, they signed him for two years at $5 million AAV.

DeAngelo has not meshed well with new head coach John Tortorella all season and has had a history of problems. Not only was it a risk, he was paid a lot to get slotted in on a defence unit that is already pretty full. It has negated some opportunities for Cam York, Yegor Zamula, and Ronnie Attard in a season where DeAngelo didn't need to be acquired. He may be able to be used as trade bait next season at the trade deadline, but so far all he's done is cost assets to provide the team with a player that has only helped the team produce more points and stay in mediocrity.
