Canadiens: 3 Top Trade Candidates Heading Into 2024

Christmas is over, and now the new year is less than one week away. Thus, over these next few days, we here at NHL Trade Rumors will discuss the three top trade candidates from each team heading into 2024.

In this latest edition of the series, we will focus on the Montreal Canadiens. With the Habs rebuilding, they will be one of the top sellers at the trade deadline, and several players have been in the rumor mill because of it.

Jake Allen: Jake Allen is the Canadiens' top trade candidate heading into the new year. The Habs have a surplus of goalies, and Sam Montembeault will stay put, as he signed an extension. Thus, Allen has been talked about a lot in the rumor mill, and the expectation is that he will be dealt. With that, multiple teams have been connected to him.

Mike Matheson: Mike Matheson has become the Habs' top defenseman. However, with the Canadiens rebuilding and having several left-shot defensemen, he has now entered trade chatter. Teams looking to add to their top four and power play will surely target Matheson.

David Savard: David Savard is another veteran defenseman who is expected to be moved at the deadline. He is a hard-nosed, right-shot defenseman who plays a reliable defensive game. So, in other words, he is exactly the kind of player playoff teams will be looking to add.

Sean Monahan is another notable name expected to be moved, as he is a pending UFA who will be a perfect middle-six center target for playoff clubs.
