Hurricanes Rumors: Team Looking At All Options For Goaltending

There are a few NHL teams that are desperately looking for goaltending, including the Detroit Red Wings, Carolina Hurricanes, and Los Angeles Kings. Elliotte Friedman notes that the Hurricanes are looking at all options. He adds that even though it's great to hear the progress of Frederik Andersen with his injury, several sources warned him to be careful of any timeline because it's still uncertain.

That is how Andersen's career has mostly gone. He is a great goaltender that is plagued with injuries. The Hurricanes have dealt with many more than they would like. This team has struggled on the back-end and in net this season despite coming into the 2023-24 season as a Stanley Cup contender and no worry about those two areas. With Andersen's timeline up in the air and Antti Raanta waived, Pyotr Kochetkov fully has the reins.

Their young goalie has been very up and down this season, but for the most part, has done a good job. The Hurricanes are so desperate because Raanta doesn't seem to be an option anymore, they already tried Jaroslav Halak on a PTO earlier in the season, and now have Aaron Dell on a PTO. Currently backing up is Yaniv Perets, coming straight from the ECHL. He is just a body right now, but the Hurricanes aren't in a good spot in net.

The team can't count on a Andersen return and are being forced to overplay Kochetkov, so the most likely option is to target a goalie on the trade market. If Dell is the best unsigned option and the cupboards are bare, there really is no other option unless they want their season depending on a goalie who started in the AHL, another one who went unsigned until now, and an ECHL goalie.
