Hurricanes Claim Goalie Off Waivers From Blue Jackets

Spencer Martin is on the move again, as the Carolina Hurricanes have claimed him off of waivers from the Columbus Blue Jackets.

When it was announced that Martin was placed on waivers, it seemed quite possible that he would get picked up by another team. This is because the Blue Jackets added him in this very way from the Vancouver Canucks earlier this season. With that, he is an NHL backup who as an easily affordable cap hit, so that naturally helps his overall appeal. Now, he is joining a team in the Hurricanes who absolutely needs help between the pipes.

While Martin is not a long-term answer for the Canes' goaltending troubles, he will provide them with another option while they deal with injuries. He should see some decent starts with Pyotr Kochetkov out with a concussion indefinitely.

Martin has appeared in 13 games this season with the Blue Jackets, where he has a 3-8-1 record to go along with a 3.65 GAA and a .887 SV%. Overall, he has had some struggles with consistency this season, but now he will be hoping to change with a much better Hurricanes defense in front of him.

Overall, there is no risk in the Canes taking a chance on Martin through this waiver claim. Let's see if it ends up working out for them from here.
