Senators Rumors: Erik Brannstrom to be Traded by Ottawa

The Ottawa Senators aren't likely trading Jakob Chychrun before Friday's deadline as that appears to be work for the summer. However, expect management to make at least one move before 3pm est Friday and that could be moving out Erik Brannstrom.

The former first-round pick was the prized jewel in the Mark Stone trade from Vegas and hasn't necessarily hit his stride in Ottawa. Now, with Jake Sanderson and Thomas Chabot manning the left side of the blueline for several years to come, Brannstrom may be better served with a change of scenery and some more playing time.

The Swedish mobile defender is owed $2 million this season and is a pending restricted free agent. The 24-year-old Brannstrom has appeared in 55 games this season, scoring three times and adding 10 assists. His best season so far in his young career was last season when he recorded a career high 18 points in 74 games.

Look for the Sens to be in discussions with western conference teams as they don't want Brannstrom to hit his potential in their division or conference. Teams like the Ducks, Coyotes and Blackhawks could be interested in doing a 'hockey trade' where they would send back a forward with some promise who could also use a change of scenery. Or they give up a second round pick?

Keep an eye on the Sens, if they do end up making a blockbuster deal, it won't be Brannstrom, it will be Chychrun being shipped out of town.
