Hurricanes Re-Sign Jalen Chatfield to Multi-Year Deal

The Carolina Hurricanes are keeping one of their top free agents around. According to Rick Dhaliwal, the Hurricanes are re-signing defenseman Jalen Chatfield. NHL insider Frank Seravalli has also added that it is a three-year, $9 million deal.

This is certainly good news for the Hurricanes, as Chatfield has become a key part of their blueline. The Michigan native was one of four Hurricanes unrestricted free agent defensemen, with Brady Skjei, Brett Pesce, and Tony DeAngelo all having expiring deal. However, they now they are keeping at least one of their defensemen around with this Chatfield deal on the way.

After cementing himself as a true NHL defenseman during the 2022-23 season, he took another big step this campaign. Besides being solid defensively, he also picked up his offensive game, posting new career highs with eight goals, 14 assists, and 22 points.

Given how well Chatfield played this season, there was an expectation that he would have a big market if he made it to free agency. However, based on Dhaliwal's report, this is not happening, and Chatfield will instead be sticking with the Canes. It will now be intriguing to see what other moves the Hurricanes decide to make from here.
