3 Oilers That Need To Be Re-Signed Based On 2025 Playoffs
The Edmonton Oilers have depth scoring in the playoffs for the first time in the Connor McDavid/Leon Draisaitl era. It has always been the dynamic duo carrying the team with little contributions from some other top players, but now the depth is coming through in a huge way.
The Oilers have six straight comeback wins, an NHL record in the playoffs, and all 12 of their forwards in the lineup have a goal through eight games. This includes McDavid, Draisaitl, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Zach Hyman, Evander Kane, Corey Perry, Trent Frederik, Adam Henrique, Connor Brown, Victor Arvidsson, Vasily Podkolzin, and Mattias Janmark. A few of them deserve new contracts with the Oilers.
There are four Oilers most deserving of contract extensions, but only three are doable. These players include Brown, Perry, and Frederik. With Ty Emberson just re-signing before the playoffs started, that gives the Oilers too many defensemen if Klingberg were to also sign, unless Mattias Ekholm's injury were to come back harder.
Brown might not be the most dominant regular season player, like Janmark, but both step their games up to a whole new level once the playoffs start. Brown has four goals and six points in eight games while also logging two minutes per game on the penalty kill. He is on a one-year, $1 million AAV deal, but his signing bonus was charged as an overage this season. He definitely deserves a raise and needs to be brought back, not only for his play, but the locker room chemistry he has with his teammates.
Perry may be 39 years old, but he is still doing everything right for the Oilers. He is a pest that gets in front of the net and finishes regardless of if it's on the power play or 5-on-5. He has taken over the net front spot on the top power-play unit to start every man advantage and has done a great job. He has three goals and five points in the playoffs so far. He just wants to win again and isn't going to cost a lot. He is more than worth bringing back again as his teams always make it to the Stanley Cup Final.
The Oilers paid a good amount for Frederik and it didn't pay off right away. He was recovering from an injury and now looks back up to full speed. He is big and is built for the playoffs. Even though he had a down year, it may give the Oilers the chance to get him for cheaper than he's worth and hope for a bounce back. He fits in nicely on the third line, can score, and plays physically.
This version of Klingberg is the one that left Dallas in hopes of signing a big ticket. He is moving very well and playing like a top defenseman that can break the puck out with ease. There just isn't room for him though.
