Golden Knights' Nicolas Roy Facing Suspension For Cross-Check To Face Of Frederic

The Edmonton Oilers stole another one on Vegas Golden Knights' home ice Thursday night, to take a commanding 2-0 series lead heading back home. But that's not all the Knights lost, as center Nicolas Roy could be out for at least the next game, as he faces disciplinary action and a likely suspension from NHL Player Safety.

Roy cross-checked Edmonton's Trent Frederic straight in the face after a battle along the boards in overtime.

Roy faces disciplinary action for facial cross-check in OT

The incident occurred at 5:37 of OT, leaving Frederic rolling on the ice holding his face, cut and bleeding. That led to a major penalty for cross-checking for Roy and a game misconduct.

The Oilers center left the game for a time, but did come back and play one more shift in the overtime, before Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl teamed up for the spectacular winning goal.

As noted by David Staples of the Edmonton Journal, national commentators watching the play reacted in shock, as you might expect.

Paul Bissonnette exclaimed: “Holy f--k, Nicolas Roy just tried to take out Trent Frederic’s upper deck," while ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski said, “NHL generally frowns upon sticks being thrust into faces.”

The 28-year-old Roy had 15 goals and 31 points with 43 penalty minutes for Vegas this season out of the bottom-six, and has a further goal and three points in eight playoff games thus far. Depending on the length of the possible suspension and how the next two games in Edmonton unfold, Roy's playoffs might be over.

The hearing will take place Friday night, with Game 3 set for Saturday at Rogers Place.
