NHL Rumors: 3 Potential Free-Agent Destinations for Ilya Samsonov
The Vegas Golden Knights have begun their offseason early, after a second-round Stanley Cup Playoff exit. The always aggressive Golden Knights will be busy this summer, trying to upgrade their roster, and one area of their team which could be changing is in the crease.
Ilya Samsonov had another injury riddled season in 2024-25, and while the numbers were still solid with a 16-9-4 record, the fact Samsonov can't be relied upon to play a full season is a growing concern. The Golden Knights have Akira Schmid who they are high on, and considering his cheap contract, will very likely be Adin Hill's backup next season.
Here's three teams to keep an eye on for Samsonov, once the free-agency period begins July 1:
New Jersey Devils
The Devils could choose a new backup for Jakob Markstrom this offseason, as Jake Allen will also hit free agency. Samsonov is familiar with Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe, from their days together with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald has come out publicly to voice his displeasure in his roster, and has confirmed changes are coming. Which should include changes in the crease. Samsonov will certainly be on their radar.
San Jose Sharks
Yaroslav Askarov is the starter of the future, but the Sharks don't have much for goaltending depth signed next season. Samsonov could give Askarov a countryman to tandem with, a mentor to learn from, and a counterpart to push each other for the starter's crease. The Sharks will be aggressive on the open market as they look to take a step next season, and this feels like a match made in heaven for their crease.
Calgary Flames
Dustin Wolf needs an experienced back up for next season, and Samsonov could be the perfect candidate. Calgary has loads of cap space, they have a GM in Craig Conroy who is looking to improve his roster, and bringing in Samsonov and his career 118-48-25 could be a move that helps stabilize the Flames goaltending position.
