NHL Rumors: 3 Winnipeg Jets Not Expected Back Next Season
After an unbelievable regular season, the Winnipeg Jets have been eliminated in six games of the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Jets were ousted by a Thomas Harley overtime winner in Game 6, as the Dallas Stars were able to seal the deal and avoid a Game 7.
The Jets have some major decisions to make this summer, as GM Kevin Cheveldayoff tries to ensure the Jets are once again a regular season juggernaut, who eventually will get over the playoff hump. With some changes on the horizon, here's three Jets who aren't expected back next season:
Nikolaj Ehlers
The 29-year-old speedster is a pending unrestricted free agent, and has enjoyed an up and down career so far with the Jets. Because of Ehlers blazing speed, it's always felt like people expected more production. Ehlers finished the regular season with 63 points in 69 games, and another seven points in eight playoff games. Throughout his tenure as a Jet, Ehlers has posted just 21 points in 45 Stanley Cup Playoff games. There's money to work with in the summer, but with a strong free-agent class, the Jets are likely to go in another direction, and give their top-six a different look for next season, and beyond.
Brandon Tanev
Tanev's going to be a hot commodity on the open market as he's one of the best checking wingers in the league, who understands his role. Tanev's going to receive multiple free-agent offers and will likely price himself out of Winnipeg. There's some potential he joins his brother Chris, and signs with the Toronto Maple Leafs this offseason, and sets himself up to finish off his career surrounded by family.
Logan Stanley
Stanley is an interesting situation as the team gave him a multi-year deal on his last contract extension, however he's had a tough time carving out a regular spot in the Jets' lineup, and when he does, it seems like an injury usually creeps into the picture. At 6-foot-7 and an edge to his game Stanley will have a ton of teams who would like to give him a chance to be a regular on their bottom pair. Look for the Jets to gauge the trade market this summer.
