NHL Rumors: Rangers Could Trade Former #1 Pick Alexis Lafreniere This Offseason

Alexis Lafreniere Trade Rumors: Will the Rangers Move On From Their Former Top Pick?

As the 2025 NHL offseason nears, speculation is swirling around Alexis Lafreniere’s future with the New York Rangers. Drafted first overall in 2020, Lafreniere was once seen as a franchise cornerstone, but his progress hasn’t matched the hype.

With the Rangers in win-now mode and facing salary cap constraints, could this be the summer they part ways with the 23-year-old forward?

According to New York Post reporter Mollie Walker, Lafreniere hasn’t been a constant topic in trade discussions, partly due to his youth and remaining upside. However, his seven-year extension, signed last October, has drawn scrutiny as his production continues to lag behind expectations.

Since his contract lacks no-trade protection until 2026-27, GM Chris Drury could explore deals if the right opportunity arises.

Could a Lafreniere Trade Be the Rangers’ Shocking Offseason Move?

While veteran winger Chris Kreider is a more obvious trade candidate for cap relief, moving Lafreniere might yield a stronger return given his age and untapped potential. Teams looking for a reclamation project—or betting on his draft pedigree—could see him as a worthwhile gamble.

The Vancouver Canucks have previously shown interest in Lafreniere, and that pursuit could resurface this summer.

If the Canucks are willing to offer NHL-ready talent or high draft picks, Drury might consider a deal, especially if he believes Lafreniere’s growth has stalled in New York.

Final Thoughts

Drury will likely weigh all options this offseason. If Lafreniere doesn’t take a major step forward early next season, trade rumors will only amplify.

But if a team like Vancouver presents an enticing offer now, the Rangers could make a move sooner rather than later.
