Steve Yzerman Gives Latest On Potential Patrick Kane Re-Signing

Detroit Red Wings Patrick Kane

General Manager of Detroit Red Wings, Steve Yzerman Confirms "Strong Mutual Interest" in Re-Signing Patrick Kane.

Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman expressed optimism about re-signing veteran forward Patrick Kane for the 2025-26 season, stating there is "strong mutual interest from both sides" in reaching a new deal.

Kane, 36, proved to be a valuable asset for the Red Wings this past season, recording 21 goals and 38 assists for 59 points in 72 games—finishing fourth in team scoring.

"He performed well for us and played a significant role," Yzerman said. "He’s extremely professional in his approach and attitude, making him a great asset to our team."

When asked about the likelihood of Kane returning, Yzerman responded, "I hope so."

Timing of Contract Talks

Yzerman mentioned that initial discussions have already taken place. "We had a brief conversation in our meeting," he said. "Ideally, we’d like to finalize things early, but if not, we’ll work it out later." Essentially, while the team prefers a quick resolution, they’re prepared to be patient if needed.

"Patrick has mentioned it himself in media interviews," Yzerman added. "I’m optimistic about getting something done."

As for contract terms, Kane’s next deal could mirror his current one. Last season, he signed a one-year, $4 million contract with up to $2.5 million in performance bonuses.
