4 Potential Free-Agent Destinations for Scott Laughton

Social Media Feature Preview
Scott Laughton is expected to hit the open free-agent market on Wednesday at noon, and there's going to be a ton of interest in the bottom-six center.

Laughton split last season between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Los Angeles Kings, and heading into free agency, there's going to be a number of playoff-bound teams, who are looking at Laughton as a perfect pivot for either their third or fourth lines.

Laughton, 32, appeared in 21 games for the Kings down the stretch, scoring five goals, and eight points, and also played some depth minutes killing penalties, and on the man advantage. Laughton's expected to sign a three year deal around $4.5 million AAV, and here's where he could end up:

Toronto Maple Leafs

The Leafs have a new general manager, but much of their core is the same, and Laughton was beloved in the dressing room. The Oakville, ON native didn't want to be traded by Brad Treliving, and while he enjoyed his time in LA, don't be surprised to see both sides circle back, and John Chayka sign Laughton to a multi-year deal.

Montreal Canadiens

The Canadiens are in the center market as they're looking two middle-six options. Laughton is peaked out as a third liner, and isn't equipped offensively to be a second-line option. The Canadiens have the cap space, they know the player well, and given how much noise they made in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, they could be high on Laughton's radar. Turning his back on the Leafs for their rival could be interesting.

Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers tried hard to trade for Laughton ahead of the trade deadline, but Treliving and Stan Bowman couldn't agree to terms. Heading into this offseason, we'll see how many free agents are jumping at the chance to play for Mike Babcock, regardless of how good the Oilers could be. Laughton will be hearing from Bowman tomorrow, there's no doubt.

Philadelphia Flyers

Don't be shocked if the Flyers circle back on Laughton. They need some depth for their bottom six, they need gamers, and winners, and Laughton is as hard nosed as they come. His competitive spirit is what the Flyers need more of, and considering how well both sides know each other, it makes a ton of sense.
