3 Teams Who Should Be Serious Suitors For Jason Robertson
If the Dallas Stars are indeed considering trading Jason Robertson to free up cap space this summer, there are plenty of teams that would be all over that. The two-time 40-goal scorer has a year left on his deal with a very reasonable $7.75 million cap hit. He'll be an RFA next summer.
Analysts the league over are making the case for their clubs to go after the soon-to-be 26-year-old. Here are three teams who should be serious suitors for Robertson:
Montreal Canadiens
The Habs need a boost up front. Big time. Their top priority this offseason is to land a second-line center. But Marc Dumont writes in Montreal Hockey Now that that shouldn't stop them from going after the left winger Robertson. "He’s not a centre, but let’s make one thing clear, Robertson is an elite player who is just 25 years old, making him an interesting trade target for the offence-starved Montreal Canadiens".
He also adds, however, correctly, that the cost of acquiring the point-per-game forward will be "astronomical."
New York Islanders
If you thought the Habs were lacking in offense, let me introduce you to the New York Islanders. They finished tied for dead last in power play goals this past season, and 28th overall in goals per game, at just 2.71.
Russ Macias of NYI Hockey Now says the team must go "all in" on landing this "dream trade target." He adds that the team has "searched high and low for an elite goalscorer for the better part of a decade now. It’s been their top target in previous summers, yet they usually walked away empty-handed".
Macias suggests a trade of restricted free agent defenseman Noah Dobson to try to land Robertson, citing that the Stars need a right-shot D-man "as bad as any team in the NHL."
New Jersey Devils have a plethora of right-shot D-men to offer Dallas
New Jersey Devils
Another club that must go "all in" on Robertson is the Devils, according to James Nichols of New Jersey Hockey Now. They finished well into the bottom half of the league in goals per game this season, with 2.93.
Picking up on the right-shot defenseman angle, no team has a bigger backlog of talented blueliners that fit that description. The list includes Dougie Hamilton, Brett Pesce, Johnathan Kovacevic, Simon Nemec and Seamus Casey. Nichols insists that none of them should be off the table in a pitch to Dallas.
Robertson finished this season with 35 goals and 80 points, and he's averaged 38 goals and 87 points over the last four years.
