Breaking NHL News: John Tavares Officially Re-Signs with Maple Leafs

After much speculation, John Tavares and the Toronto Maple Leafs have officially agreed on a four-year extension to keep their former captain and hometown kid in Blue & White.

It's a four-year contract with a $4.38 million cap hit, a very good hometown discount for the Leafs, after Tavares popped 38 goals this past season.

The deal comes with a no-move clause for the first two seasons, then has a five-team trade list for the final two years. The contract also comes with $2 million in deferred money.

The 34-year-old has produced consistently in his seven seasons with Toronto, with six 20-goal years, three seasons at 30+, and one topping the 40-goal mark.

The offseason began with much consternation about how much the Leafs should shell out for JT, but after some haggling and creativity, the two sides were able to make it work.

“Thrilled to be back and to re-sign," said Tavares. "Amazing journey it has been. My belief in us to win is extremely high."

Tavares finished this past season with 38 goals and 74 points.
