Breaking Trade: Maple Leafs Acquire Matias Maccelli From Utah Mammoth

One day ahead of free agency, the Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired playmaking middle-six forward Matias Maccelli from the Utah Mammoth.

A conditional third-round pick heads to Utah in return. The pick upgrades to a 2029 second-rounder if Toronto makes playoffs this coming year and Maccelli records at least 51 points.

Maccelli, 24, had a brutal year for Utah last season, with just 18 points in 55 games. The two-way winger will get a fresh start in Toronto, and hopes to return to his previous production, which saw him post 17 goals and 57 points in 2023-24, and 11 goals and 49 points in 64 games in his first full season in Arizona. He made the NHL's All-Rookie Team in 2022-23.

He'll earn $3.425 million on the final year of his deal this coming season.

The Leafs are now down to $10.15 million in projected cap space with 20 active players, per PuckPedia.

For the Mammoth, they clear nearly $3.5 million, getting to $18.4M in cap space. As noted by Cam Robinson and other sources, Utah is expected to "aggressively pursue a top free-agent forward."
