The Edmonton Oilers are busy the morning before free agency as they have signed another forward to a one-year deal. After extending UFA Kasperi Kapanen, Edmonton also inked Noah Philp to a one-year, $775,000 two-way deal. The 26-year-old NHL-ready prospect was an RFA.
Philp got his first taste of NHL action this season, playing 15 games for the Oilers and recording two assists. He had a very good 62.5 goals for %. With the changes at forward for the Oilers and the expectation for the team to get a bit younger, Philp is pushing for a full-time role in the NHL in 2025-26.
He is a 6’3” right-shot center who would play on the fourth line, whether that be at center or on the wing. Bob Stauffer specifically mentioned that Philp needs to work on faceoffs, but fortunately the Oilers have a number of players who can play center and the wing.
Philp has proved himself at the AHL level, finishing the season with eight goals and 14 points in the last 13 games of the season in the final month. Overall, he had 15 goals and 30 points in 52 games for the Bakersfield Condors in 2024-25.
As of right now, Philp will be competing for a roster spot and ice time with Mattias Janmark, Max Jones, James Hamblin, Quinn Hutson, David Tomasek, Josh Samanski, and Viljami Marjala. Even if the Oilers make some more additions, all of those names will be in the mix and will all likely get in at least one game for the Oilers next season.
