Calgary Flames Sign Bahl To Long-Term Extension

Kevin Bahl, Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames are going all in on Kevin Bahl as it was reported that he is signing a six-year, $5.35 million AAV deal.

The contract has no trade protection for the first two years, but then has an eight-team no trade list attached for the final four years. The 25-year-old was a RFA and previously had a cap hit of $1.05 million AAV. So this is a significant upgrade.

Bahl was a second-round pick by the Arizona Coyotes, but was traded to the New Jersey Devils before playing a game in the NHL. He spent all but this season with the Devils, but put up solid numbers for the Flames after being brought over in the Jacob Markstrom trade.

Bahl had three goals and 20 points in 73 games while significantly reducing the amount of penalties he took. His ice time jumped over four minutes from the season prior in New Jersey and Bahl logged over 21 minutes of ice time per game. He is a major penalty killer for the Flames as he was on the ice killing penalties for 182 minutes. For the second season in a row, he recorded over 100 blocked shots and hits, so he is a perfect complement to an offense-first defenseman like Perekh who Bahl may be playing with long-term.

Bahl joins Weegar, Jonathan Huberdeau, and Matthew Coronato as the only players signed through 2031 on the Flames.
