NHL Rumors: 5 Teams With Mangiapane On Their Radar

Andrew Mangiapane, Washington Capitals

Andrew Mangiapane is a solid middle-6 winger who can score. He scored 35 goals for the Calgary Flames in 2021-22. Unfortunately, it may be seen as a one-off as he hasn’t topped 18 goals in any other season. Realistically, I think he settles in as a 17-25 goal scorer depending on his situation, but he can also play a physical game as well.

Mangiapane scored 14 goals and recorded 28 points this season, a little low for his standards, but he didn’t have a poor season. He is capable of playing in every situation and has for a number of years, but it doesn’t appear like he will be signing back with the Washington Capitals.

David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period said that the Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, Boston Bruins, Seattle Kraken, and Toronto Maple Leafs have Mangiapane on their radar. Given what he brings to a team, all of these interested parties make sense for one reason or another.

The Oilers are looking to get younger this offseason. This will see some older UFAs move on and even more trades than just Evander Kane. Mangiapane is 29 years old and at least consistently provides 14-18 goals. I think that is worth a couple of million on a short-term deal as he also adds physicality for the postseason.

The Jets have lots of cap space, some roster room, and appear to be losing Nikolaj Ehlers. I’m not suggesting that Mangiapane will replace Ehlers by any means as the Jets still have to find a better replacement, but Winnipeg could offer a bit more as a team with $25 million in projected cap space and are a team that can win. I can see Mangiapane in a third or fourth line role in a similar fashion to Alex Iafallo.

The Bruins have a number of RFAs to sign, but they also need much more offense than they got this season. While defense and goaltending should improve with a healthy team, Mangiapane could play a larger role on a team like the Bruins who are looking to bounce back and be relevant again.

The Kraken have already added three forwards and shipped one out. They may not be done yet and there have also been rumors regarding Jared McCann. Whether those are true or not, there is plenty of cap space to bring in Mangiapane and deepen the forward group even further. Without any stars, the Kraken are vying for the deepest team in the league and that could end up working out pretty well for them.

The Maple Leafs now have cap space and a need for middle-6 wingers. Pontus Holmberg and Nick Robertson aren’t going to cut it if Toronto wants to go deeper in the playoffs. Mangiapane has experience and as I mentioned above, will consistently score at least 14-18 goals. With a better center like potentially John Tavares, Mangiapane could be a sneaking addition that gets back into the 20+ goal range.
