Dallas Stars fire head coach Pete DeBoer

Big changes in Big D.

The Dallas Stars announced on Friday they've fired head coach Pete DeBoer. The veteran bench boss led the Stars to three straight Western Conference Finals, but after a very questionable end to this year's playoffs, GM Jim Nill decided it was time to move on.

“After careful consideration, we believe that a new voice is needed in our locker room to push us closer to our goal of winning the Stanley Cup,” General Manager Jim Nill said in a press release. “We’d like to thank Pete for everything that he has helped our organization achieve over the past three seasons and wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”

While DeBoer has certainly had a ton of success with the Stars, following their Game 5 loss to the Edmonton Oilers, he called out goaltender Jake Oettinger, who let in two goals on two shots to start the contest. Considering Oettinger is a big piece of the core in Dallas, and is signed long term, many around the league felt it was 'career suicide' to throw his starting goaltender under the bus. Turns out that was exactly the case, at least for the time being.

“I didn’t blame it all on Jake, but the reality is if you go back to last year’s playoffs, he’s lost six of seven games to Edmonton,” DeBoer said. “And we give up two goals on two shots in an elimination game. It was partly to spark our team and wake them up, but also knowing that the status quo had not been working. That’s a pretty big sample size.”

In three seasons with the Stars, DeBoer led them to a 149-68-29 record, however was 29-27 in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
