Calgary Flames Re-Sign Justin Kirkland

Justin Kirkland, Calgary Flames
Justin Kirkland would have been an everyday NHLer for the Calgary Flames and play his first full season in the NHL if he hadn't suffered a season-ending knee injury in November. The 28-year-old put up two goals and eight points in 21 games playing in a fourth line role and having only played nine games in the NHL prior to this season.

According to Pat Steinberg, the Flames and Kirkland are closing in on a one-year extension that will carry an AAV of a little under $1 million. He is set to become a UFA this summer. Per the Flames, they have now officially signed Kirkland at $900,000 for one year.

Kirkland had a goals for percentage of 75, which is very good. His season wasn't that long, but for the sample size, the Flames benefited while he was on the ice. He averaged under 10 minutes per game and likely won't play every game with the projected additions that will come for the Flames, but he should make the team.

Kirkland had 16 blocked shots and 45 hits in his 21 games this season and should compete with Ryan Lomberg, Adam Klapka, and even possibly Martin Pospisil for ice time next season. It's never a bad thing to have depth, and Kirkland would provide more of that to the Flames who are trying to find their way back into the playoffs. Kirkland was Calgary's Masterson nominee, and as Steinberg mentioned, he went 3/4 in the shootouts. Those extra shootout points could change the Flames' fortunes over the course of the season.
