Flyers Rumors: Philadelphia Linked To Avalanche's Martin Necas

Colorado Avalanche forward Martin Necas reacts during 2025 game.

With Martin Necas potentially on the move again this summer, Philly Hockey Now’s William James believes the Philadelphia Flyers could be a serious landing spot.

Necas, now with the Colorado Avalanche after being dealt in the Mikko Rantanen blockbuster, may already be looking for a new home. According to Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos, the Czech forward is reportedly “not overly thrilled” in Colorado, and with just one year left on his contract at $6.5 million, the Avs may be forced to explore trade options if extension talks stall.

A Fit for Philly's Forward Core?

Necas put up 83 points last season across Carolina and Colorado, splitting time between wing and center. That versatility, especially his ability to drive play and score, makes him a tantalizing fit for a Flyers team still searching for a true top-line center.

William James speculates that Philadelphia could be interested in converting him back to center, where he was originally drafted. The risk? His faceoff struggles (a career 41% success rate). But as James points out, it may be a risk worth taking, especially with Necas craving a starring role that he hasn't found in Carolina or Colorado.

The Flyers also have the cap space and long-term opportunity to make Necas feel like a franchise cornerstone. He’d slot in beside Travis Konecny and Matvei Michkov as one of the faces of the team’s rebuild. That level of visibility and responsibility might be exactly what Necas is looking for.

What Would a Trade Look Like?

James outlines a few paths Philly could take to acquire Necas. A package might start with winger Owen Tippett or Tyson Foerster, a first-round pick, and one of the Flyers' young defensemen like Emil Andrae or Egor Zamula. Philadelphia could also ease Colorado’s cap crunch by taking on a contract like Josh Manson’s ($4.5M). If the trade is done post-July 1, including Rasmus Ristolainen with 50% salary retention becomes a realistic option.

With Colorado having just 12 forwards signed and little room under the cap, the timing might be perfect for Philly to strike. If Necas truly wants to return to center, and the Avalanche can’t meet his contract demands, expect the Flyers to be front and center in the bidding.
