Mammoth's Maccelli Is Starting To Get More Trade Attention
This season didn't go so well for Matias Maccelli and a parting of ways with the Utah Mammoth seems inevitable. The 24-year-old became a full time NHLer in 2022-23 and surprised many as a small former fourth-round pick.
Maccelli had two strong seasons to kick start his NHL career where he showed off his quickness and passing ability. He put up 17 goals and 57 points last season, but that dropped significantly with others stepping up and coming into the lineup. Maccelli dropped to eight goals and 18 points in 55 games while playing 2.5 fewer minutes per game as well.
As a former top-6/second line winger, Maccelli has become a bottom-6 player for the Mammoth and a change in scenery is very much necessary, especially with the team looking to add bigger pieces and players like Dylan Guenther and Josh Doan now ahead of him.
Elliotte Friedman reported that Maccelli's name is starting to make more rounds in the trade market. He has a cap hit of $3.425 million AAV and is a RFA at the end of next season. It will be the third and final year of his three-year contract he signed out of his entry-level deal.
Maccelli is relatively inexpensive for a player who showed the ability to put up nearly 60 points on a non-playoff team. I think the best spot for him in a lineup is in the middle-6. With the cap going up as well, there could be plenty of teams showing interest in the player who will be looking to bounce back next season.
