Senators: Big Update On Batherson Trade Rumors
The Ottawa Senators took a great step in the right direction this season and made the postseason. While losing to the division winning Toronto Maple Leafs, the Senators showed fight and have the makeup to get back to the playoffs next season. There will be some changes, but according to general manager of the Senators, Steve Staios, there is no truth to the rumors that Drake Batherson might be traded.
This is great news for Senators fans who might have been worried seeing those arise. Batherson is on a very team-friendly deal and it would be very tough to replace his scoring with the same amount of money. I believe he is one of the core pieces of the team and the 27-year-old is locked in at $4.975 million AAV for two more seasons.
Batherson's production should see him at a much higher number closer to the other core members of the team. $6.5 million AAV at least. But while Ottawa has him on such a good deal and are now contending, there is no reason for the team to move on from him, especially not just to bring back Claude Giroux for another few seasons. If anything, the team should and will be able to find cap room elsewhere to fit Giroux back if he wants.
Batherson is easily a top-6 forward, in his prime, and scored the second most goals on the team (26) and put up the second most points (68). He is one of the players who has been around, drafted and developed, and will help push the Senators forward. Ottawa still has some moves yet to do, but Batherson is safe this offseason and should come back with just as strong of a 2025-26 season.
