Stars Could Have Extension Coming For Robertson This Summer
While the Dallas Stars have already made a trade and signed a few players, there is more to be done for one of the best teams in the league. There isn't very much cap space to work with and it will still be very tough to free up cap space next offseason, but Jason Robertson has to be signed if the team isn't trading him.
The Stars don't want to have to move Robertson as he has three consecutive 80+ point seasons, but after next season, Robertson, Thomas Harley, Mavrik Bourque, and Nils Lundqvist will all be RFAs. Not much cap space will be coming off the books and the real money the team needs to get rid of is Tyler Seguin's. He makes $9.5 million AAV for two more seasons. It doesn't line up well for Dallas.
According to Elliotte Friedman, the Stars will discuss an extension with Robertson over the next few weeks. At the very least, the Stars can manage to keep Robertson for next season and move on from Mikael Granlund, Evgenii Dadonov, and bring back Jamie Benn with the remaining money. Signing Robertson and company will be a next offseason worry as he gives the team a much better chance to win than if Dallas didn't have him.
Robertson is going to get at least $8.4 million AAV on his next deal. That is the number Wyatt Johnston got and Robertson has put up a 46-goal, 109-point season. While Robertson wasn't great in the 2025 playoffs, he was very good in the two prior. Odds say it was just a one-off and the 25-year-old will bounce back next season.
Robertson is entering his prime or arguably already there. He is a game-changer that the Stars have to have as a core piece. I believe that Dallas will be able to get an extension done, but the team is going to have to get creative the rest of the way.
