NHL News: Islanders' Matt Martin Announces Retirement & Lands New Gig


The New York Islanders have shared that forward Matt Martin has announced his retirement from the NHL after 15 seasons.

The Islanders also announced that Martin will be staying with the organization, as he has been hired as special assistant to the general manager. 

Seeing Martin sticking around in a front office role with the Islanders is not surprising in the slightest. The Windsor, Ontario native spent 14 out of his 16 seasons as an Islander and is certainly respected immensely by the club because of it. 

Martin was selected by the Islanders with the 148th overall pick of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. In 14 seasons over two stints with the Islanders, Martin recorded 73 goals, 84 assists, 157 points, 995 penalty minutes, and 3,484 hits. He was a very important part of the Islanders' bottom six, as he provided them with plenty of grit and toughness. 

Martin also played two seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2016-17 to 2017-18. In 132 games as a Maple Leafs, he recorded eight goals, 21 points, and 447 hits. 

Overall, Martin had himself a lengthy playing career as a hard-nosed bottom-six forward, and he is now ready to begin his front office career with the Islanders.
