Breaking NHL News: Nikolaj Ehlers Signs Six-Year Free Agent Deal


The news was broken by NHL Insider Kevin Weekes, that the Nikolaj Ehlers Sweepstakes has come to an end, as the former Winnipeg Jets star forward is signing with the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Colorado AvalancheAnaheim Ducks, and Toronto Maple Leafs were thought to have checked in on Ehlers, but the Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals were thought to be the finalists. 

The Hurricanes have confirmed the signing:

It's a six-year deal with an $8.5 million AAV.  

Ehlers, 29, is an eight-time 20-goal scorer in his 10 NHL seasons, all of them spent with the Jets. 

He was the 9th overall selection by Winnipeg in the 2014 NHL Draft. 

This past season, Ehlers posted 24 goals and 39 assists for 63 points in 69 games in just 15:48 average ice time.

He was the last notable scorer left on the UFA market.
