Burns was one of the top unrestricted free agent (UFA) defensemen still available for the taking, but he has now found his new home with the Avalanche. With this move, the Avalanche have given the right side of their defense a nice boost.
When looking at the Avalanche's lineup, Burns should slot nicely on their third pairing. In addition, he should get some time on their second power-play unit.
Burns, 40, spent this past season with the Carolina Hurricanes. In 82 regular-season games with the Hurricanes in 2024-25, the 6-foot-5 defenseman posted six goals, 23 assists, 29 points, and a plus-7 rating. He also recorded one goal, four assists, five points, and a plus-1 rating in 15 post-season games.
Overall, this is a solid move for the Avalanche. While Burns is not necessarily the star he was during his prime, he is still capable of providing solid offense from the point. In addition, he will give the Avalanche another veteran in their room to help mentor their younger players, which is certainly not a bad thing.
