Breaking: Sabres Make Shocking Move With RFA Bowen Byram

Bowen Byram, Buffalo Sabres defenseman, isn't going anywhere, as the Sabres have signed him to a 2-year extension

Buffalo Sabres' RFA defenseman Bowen Byram has been one of the top names on the NHL's trade list this summer, with sign-and-trade rumors being discussed in many league circles. But in an unexpected and somewhat shocking late-night move, the Sabres have signed Byram to a new two-year deal with an AAV of $6.25 million.

AFP Analytics had pegged Byram at being able to land a five-year deal with a $7.1 million AAV this summer, and many prognosticators around the NHL figured he was angling to go as high as the $9M mark in a sign-and-trade.

Two weeks ago, it was reported that four teams were in "deep trade talks" with the Sabres for Byram

But Buffalo has put off the drama for the time being at least, with the 24-year-old blueliner agreeing to a two-year bridge deal at far below his supposed market value, allowing the two sides to avoid arbitration. The team had elected for salary arbitration, even though the player did not.

He will now become an unrestricted free agent at the age of 26 in the summer of 2027.

Byram registered 38 points in 82 games this season along with 116 blocked shots in 22:42 average ice time. He had a plus/minus rating of plus-11.
