NHL News: Capitals To Sign Martin Fehervary To Massive Extension

According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Washington Capitals are expected to sign defenseman Martin Fehervary to a seven-year, $42 million contract.

Fehervary, 25, is entering the final season of his contract in 2025-26 and will officially be eligible to sign this extension on July 1.

Seeing the Capitals work hard to extend Fehervary so quickly is not surprising in the slightest. The 2018 second-round pick is an important part of their defensive group, so it is undoubtedly big news that they are reportedly locking him up long term.

Fehervary is coming off a very strong 2024-25 season with the Capitals, too. In 81 games on the year, he scored five goals and set new career highs with 20 assists, 25 points, and a plus-18 rating. With these, the 6-foot-2 blueliner hit a new level, and he is now being rewarded for it with this contract extension.

In 299 games over five NHL seasons with the Capitals, Fehervary has recorded 22 goals, 53 assists, 75 points, 809 hits, and a plus-13 rating. It is going to be very interesting to see how he builds upon these career stats after earning this big contract extension from the Capitals from here.
