NHL News: Buffalo Sabres sign free-agent goaltender Alex Lyon

The Buffalo Sabres have added some depth in their crease.

According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, the Sabres are set to sign free-agent goaltender Alex Lyon.

The details of the contract are not yet finalized or announced, but it's expected to be similiar to his two-year contract at $900,000 AAV that he was just coming off from the Red Wings. Lyon has had a hard time finding consistent playing time wherever he's played, but has gone on some stretches of absolute brilliance throughout his career, as he's as streaky as they come.

In 30 games last season, Lyon posted a 14-9-1 record with a 2.81 goals-against average, a .896 save percentage and one shutout. With Cam Talbot signed on for one more year and GM Steve Yzerman going out and getting John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks, it became pretty obvious there was no chance Lyon was heading back to Motown.

In 113 career NHL appearances, Lyon has a record of 51-38-11, with a 2.99 GAA, a .902 SV% and four shutouts. Lyon will battle it out with Devon Levi for the backup role in Buffalo, as Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen remains the goaltender of the now, and the goaltender of the future.

The Sabres enter free agency with $20.8 million in cap space.
