NHL Rumors: 7 Trade Destinations Listed For Jason Robertson
Going into the final year of his contract with the Dallas Stars, sniper Jason Robertson is currently listed at the very top of one insider's trade board, as the team struggles with how to proceed with the two-time 40-goal scorer. His $7.75 cap hit will take a huge jump on his next contract, and the Stars must decide if they're willing to pay it.
Given those circumstances, Robertson has been atop the rumor mill all summer, linked to any number of teams at any given time. Ryan Dixon of Sportsnet says he "tried to pare a big list of potentially interested parties down to a shorter group of possible landing spots for Robertson should a trade come about this summer."
And he came up with a list of seven teams that seem to make the most sense:
- Los Angeles Kings
- Carolina Hurricanes
- Washington Capitals
- Columbus Blue Jackets
- Detroit Red Wings
- Seattle Kraken
- Utah Mammoth
The list begins with Robertson's hometown team. The Kings are in need of an elite scorer to boost the top of their lineup, and, as Dixon notes, despite their other contract concerns this summer (extending Adrian Kempe and coming up with an agreement with RFA Alex Laferriere), "Los Angeles would have to look at it from every conceivable angle if a scorer like Robertson, who grew up in its backyard, became available."
The Hurricanes already made a big splash this summer with the free agent signing of Nikolaj Ehlers, but their never-ending search to upgrade their offense shouldn't rest on its laurels. And they do have the cap space to make it happen.
The Capitals were runners-up on Ehlers, so turning their attention to an even better scorer like Robertson, if he is truly available, makes sense.
The Blue Jackets are always looking for offense, and they have over $16 million in cap space still to spend.
"As much as any team in the league, it feels like Seattle could use an injection of high-end scoring," writes Dixon about the Kraken, while noting that these two clubs have already struck a deal this summer, with the Stars sending Mason Marchment to Seattle. Do they pick up where that left off?
