Edmonton Oilers CEO Comments on Connor McDavid Extension

Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid isn't in a rush to get his contract extension completed, as he's been busy enjoying his offseason, which includes heading across the pond to celebrate Leon Draisaitl's wedding.

McDavid hasn't signed on the dotted line just yet, which has some Oilers fans slightly concerned, considering he was eligible to ink an extension on July 1st. There's been some rumblings about a shorter termed deal than the max eight years, which also isn't sitting very well with some Oilers' faithful.

Oilers' CEO Jeff Jackson was recently asked about his thoughts on the lack of conversations, which have apparently picked up of late, but it's obviously from Jackson's tone, the expectation is a deal gets completed in the very near future. Jackson joined Jeff Marek, host of Daily Faceoff’s The Sheet, for an exclusive interview last week in Muskoka, Ont.

I’m not sure, other than the fact that there’s a certain level of comfort with Connor. He’s been in Edmonton for 10 years. He’s been very vocal about how much he loves the city. He loves playing for this team. The team is a good team, which is paramount to Connor, having an opportunity to win. I think the conversation would be a lot different if we were struggling and we hadn’t been and gone as far. I mean, as disappointing as it has been to not win, we’ve been right there for two years in a row. I think although we’ve made changes this summer, I think we have a really good team again, so Connor feels good about all that.

McDavid is set to earn $12.5 million against the cap next season, and his next deal should move past Draisaitl for most expensive on the team, as his German teammate makes $14 million AAV.
