Maple Leafs Could Still Move 2 Of 3 Trade Candidates Out Before Season
The Toronto Maple Leafs have under $2 million in projected cap to still spend, but it doesn't appear like they are happy with their roster just yet. There are still a couple of players that could be moved out, which would then likely result in at least one more addition, either Jack Roslovic or a player in a trade.
Chris Johnston said that "the Leafs could still ship out one or more of (David) Kampf, (Calle) Jarnkrok, or (Nick) Robertson before the season begins. They've been reluctant to part with Robertson because of his age-related upside.
There may be challenges with moving any of these players and some problems that may arise during the season. Kampf, for one, logged the most time on ice on the penalty kill out of any forward still left on the Maple Leafs, but if he isn't going to play every game anyways, then Toronto would have had to lean on other players. He is one of six forwards who logged over one minute of ice time on the penalty kill last season, but Nic Roy, who had a little less, is also an option.
Kampf has two years left on his deal at $2.4 million AAV and has a 10-team no-trade clause on his contract for only this coming season. Jarnkrok has one year left on his deal at $2.1 million AAV, is an injury risk, and also has a 10-team no-trade clause as well.
Jarnkrok is one of the other players who gets reps on the penalty kill, but played just 19 games last season. Both he and Kampf's Corsi and expected goals for % were not good and much less than the team on average. Starting in the defensive zone 75% of the time is a factor, but if the Maple Leafs don't move one of both of these players, someone is going to be in the press box that probably shouldn't every game.
As mentioned prior, Robertson's upside could make a trade look bad fairly quickly. He hasn't had a great opportunity, but another team could definitely provide him with that and a fresh start. He has always had skills and scored 15 goals in 69 games last season. If he reaches the 20-goal mark, that isn't something to overlook and many teams would want that from a player in his role.
These three names have been mentioned all summer and August to September is when some trades are expected to pick up as teams look to get closer to finalizing their roster.
