Maple Leafs Trying To Move Around Money, Sign Free Agent
Jack Roslovic is arguably the top free agent left unsigned this offseason and he has no shortage of interest. He is going to find a team and there is a really good chance he will get a contract before the season, not just sign a PTO after the 28-year-old scored 22 goals and 39 points last season.
Roslovic can play center or the wing and contribute on the power play, but may have turned a corner in the faceoff circle last season as it was his first above 50% (54.1%). What is appealing from Roslovic's game is his ability to produce at 5-on-5, scoring 21 of his goals at even strength.
Roslovic has played for a few teams in his career, but is consistent wherever he goes. He ideally fits in on a third line, but can play second line minutes as well. According to Elliotte Friedman, "another player we talked about for Toronto was Jack Roslovic. There's still a few teams looking at him. I've heard five or six. We know with Toronto, they're trying to move money around."
What the Toronto Maple Leafs are trying to do is move on from 1-2 of David Kampf, Calle Jarnkrok, and Nick Robertson, but in the right deal. Especially for Robertson, Toronto isn't just going to give him away to open a roster spot and cap space.
Defensively, Roslovic is a downgrade to Kampf and Jarnkrok, but is a pretty sizeable upgrade offensively, especially if he can pot 20+ goals again. Jarnkrok is much less likely to stay healthy and the Maple Leafs have centers with Auston Matthews, John Tavares, Max Domi, Nic Roy, and Scott Laughton, so can afford to open up cap space by moving Kampf's $2.4 million AAV contract that has two more years left on it.
Roslovic would fit in very well on the Maple Leafs' third line and could really complete the lineup that has had a lot of good things done to it this offseason.
