Oilers' Insider Gives Insight Into 3 Young Goalie Options

Nico Daws, New Jersey Devils
The Edmonton Oilers are looking for a younger goalie that could be in their crease for a long time and there are a few options around the league despite a lot already going down this offseason. The Oilers haven't been active with their defense or goaltending and while the defense isn't changing, Stan Bowman is busy looking at future starters for the team.

Bob Stauffer thinks that Nico Daws of the New Jersey Devils will hit waivers, Michael DiPietro won't be hitting waivers because the Boston Bruins don't want to lose him, and revealed what he thinks the price to get Sebastian Cossa will be.

Daws will absolutely hit waivers. The Devils made their decision with that when Jake Allen was re-signed for five years at $1.8 million AAV until he's 40. The 24-year-old Daws won't be making the NHL team over Allen or Jacob Markstrom, who has another year left on his deal, but will also likely get re-signed. Daws went 3-1-0 in four starts and six games, posting a 1.60 GAA and .939 SV% to go along with a goals saved above expected of 4.95. He would be a great target for the Oilers, but he will likely have to go through a number of other teams before Edmonton gets a shot at him on waivers.

The Bruins have Jeremy Swayman as their starter, but also Joonas Korpisalo under contract for three more years. Korpisalo was arguably just as good or better than Swayman last season, but didn't get the same opportunity to start. There is a chance he is moved before the season or even after it starts because of his unhappiness and to get DiPietro up with the Bruins finally. He is 26 years old and has only played three NHL games in his career, but he has built himself up nicely over the past two seasons. DiPietro finished last season with a 26-8-6 record in the AHL and a 2.05 GAA and .927 SV%. He is signed for two years.

Cossa is going to cost the most, but is possibly the safest bet and the one the Oilers could pull off the easiest. The Oilers asked about the Detroit Red Wings' Trey Augustine, but he was a non-starter, so they are likely shifting their attention to Cossa. Stauffer said that he thinks the young goalie will cost a first-round pick. He doesn't have to be moved as the 22-year-old will not be hitting waivers yet, but more teams than the Oilers will likely be calling with Augustine turning pro soon.

There aren't a ton of options for the Oilers, but there are good ones that could be good for the team and fit what they're looking for...youth.
