Oilers Linked To 2 Free Agent Forwards & 2 Goalies For PTOs

Ilya Samsonov, Vegas Golden Knights
The Edmonton Oilers don't appear to be done adding to their roster or organization yet even though they have had a solid offseason. They've moved money out, made good trades, and also made room for some younger players to start coming in and making an impact. With all that, there is still a bit of space to bolster on cheap deals.

More trades could be on the table with a month before training camp, but what's more likely in the immediate future while teams are signing players to PTOs is the Oilers jumping in on that front.

On the forward side, the Oilers are rumored to be looking at Max Pacioretty and Klim Kostin. For goalies, there are two options being rumored as well. These netminders are Ilya Samsonov and Alexandar Georgiev."

The Oilers do need to make a goalie addition. Samsonov would be an interesting one and the best to come from free agency. Edmonton finally changed out their goalie coach, so Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard might be given a chance to show it was coaching more than them, but it's never a bad idea to have a backup plan. Matt Tomkins is not a good backup plan in the minors and the Oilers let Olivier Rodrigue become a UFA.

Both Samsonov and Georgiev have had their stretches and years in the NHL despite also struggling. Georgiev seems more like the same that the Oilers already have as he didn't do well on a good team like the Colorado Avalanche either. Samsonov has more recent success and can split the net with Skinner.

As for the forwards, the Oilers do want to keep getting younger and are still linked to other younger players, but Pacioretty goes against that completely. He is an older, injury-prone winger, but he can score and make an impact when healthy. The Oilers don't have Corey Perry anymore, and although they play different games, Pacioretty is a veteran that has been around and knows the game well.

Kostin would be a nice addition to the Oilers as his most success came in Edmonton before he wanted more money than they could give him. That didn't turn out the best and now Vasily Podkolzin has the role of being the energy creator, but Kostin could earn himself a deal and maybe make the NHL squad, but also be a next man up in the AHL. The Oilers have a lot they can still do and I wouldn't expect them to be quiet leading up to the season.
