BREAKING: Anthony Stolarz & Maple Leafs Agree On Multi-Year Extension

Multiple reports have revealed that the Toronto Maple Leafs and goaltender Anthony Stolarz have agreed in principle to a four-year extension worth $15 million, that would pay him $3.75 million per season.

The $3.75M AAV is a team-friendly number for the Leafs, as many reports over the last couple of weeks indicated that the Stolarz camp was looking for something between $4M-$5M. Many of the other No. 1 goalies around the league have signed recent long-term deals in the $7M and $8M AAV ranges. And in fact, as noted by David Alter, the $3.75M cap hit would put Stolarz at 26th among goalies in the NHL.

Stolarz posted a league-best .926 save percentage last season along with a 2.14 goals-against average. Unfortunately, he was only able to start 33 games after missing a couple of months with a knee injury in the middle of the season. He was then concussed in Game 1 of the second round of the playoffs when Sam Bennett barrelled through the crease with an elbow to Stolarz's head. The goalie was not able to return to the Toronto net for the rest of the series, which Florida won in seven games.

If the 31-year-old netminder can stay healthy, this will be a tremendous deal for the Leafs.

The other half of the team's top goaltending tandem, Joseph Woll, remains out indefinitely on a personal leave, with no timeline for a return. Stolarz will be asked to take on a much bigger load than he ever has before in his NHL career.

As for the friendly cap hit, it leaves the team currently with over $20 million in projected cap space for next year’s potentially massive free agent market.
